Why choose synthetic dreadlocks?
Because changing your look should be fun, not permanent. Synthetic dreadlocks let you try a completely new style for a festival, a season or simply because you feel like it — while keeping the option to return to your natural hair whenever you want.
1. A new look in just a few hours
Natural dreadlocks take time to mature. Synthetic dreadlocks can be braided in within a few hours, with no awkward in-between stage. They can usually be installed once your own hair is around 4 cm long.
2. No permanent commitment
Wear them for the summer, a special event or as a way to find out whether the style feels right for you. When you are ready for another change, simply have them removed.
3. Experiment without colouring your hair
Go short or long, natural or bold, monochrome or rainbow. You can change the colour and mood of your hairstyle without bleaching or dyeing your own hair.
4. A protective, low-maintenance style
When installed and cared for correctly, synthetic dreadlocks can help protect your hair from daily heat styling and excessive handling. They are easy to live with and make busy mornings wonderfully simple.
About double-ended (DE) dreadlocks
A double-ended dreadlock has two ends joined at the centre. Your own hair is braided around the centre fold, leaving two dreadlock lengths hanging from a single section.
- More volume with fewer individual pieces
- A secure installation with less slipping
- Faster installation than many single-ended (SE) pieces
- A full, dense finished look
How to care for synthetic dreadlocks
Synthetic dreadlocks need less maintenance than mature natural dreadlocks, but a little regular care will keep them fresh, comfortable and looking their best.
How often should I wash them?
Wash when needed; for many people, once every two weeks is enough.
- Dilute a gentle shampoo — ideally sulphate-free — with water.
- Apply it mainly to the scalp and roots, then massage gently.
- Let the lather run through the lengths and rinse thoroughly. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the dreadlocks.
- Avoid heavy oils and rich rinse-out conditioners near the roots, as they can encourage the braids to slip.
How can I prevent odour and itching?
Always dry the dreadlocks completely after washing. Press out excess water with a towel, then allow plenty of time for air-drying. A lightweight scalp tonic can help refresh the scalp. Mild itching can occur while you get used to braided hair, but persistent pain, redness or irritation means the style should be loosened or removed.
How can I reduce frizz and friction?
Wear the hair in a loose ponytail or braid at night and protect it with a satin or silk cap. Avoid rough fabrics that rub against the installation. If the synthetic fibre is specifically heat-safe, loose ends may be smoothed very carefully at a low temperature through a damp cloth; always follow the fibre maker’s instructions and test a hidden section first.
How long can I wear them?
A typical installation is worn for around 4–8 weeks. After removal, wash and condition your own hair and give your scalp a short break before reinstalling.
Can I reuse them?
Yes. If the set is still in good condition, wash it, let it dry completely and store it in a clean, dry place. Heat or hot-water reshaping should only be used for fibres designed for that treatment and according to the maker’s care instructions.
Care at a glance
- Wash only when needed — often every two weeks is enough.
- Always let the dreadlocks dry completely.
- Reduce friction at night with a loose braid and a satin or silk cap.
- Remove the installation after roughly 4–8 weeks and give your hair and scalp a break.
With the right care, a quality synthetic dreadlock set can stay beautiful, comfortable and ready to wear again for years.
