synthetic dreadlocks are wonderfully low-maintenance compared with permanent locs, but a little care keeps them looking clean, soft and ready for every day you wear them. Treat them kindly and you can keep coming back to the same set.

1. How often should I wash synthetic dreadlocks?

Wash them when they need it — for most people, around every two weeks is plenty.

Mix a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo with water and work it mainly into the roots and scalp. Massage softly; there is no need to scrub the lengths.

Rinse thoroughly so no shampoo stays behind. Skip heavy conditioners and oils: they can make the installation slip and leave the locs feeling coated.

2. How do I keep my scalp fresh?

Locs that stay damp for too long can start to smell a little off — nobody wants that wet-towel energy.

After washing, press out as much water as you can with a towel and let the locs dry completely. A lightweight scalp mist can feel great when your scalp is itchy or needs a refresh; a little adjustment itch is normal when you are new to an installation.

3. How do I stop fuzz and frizz?

At night, tie your locs loosely into a ponytail or braid, or sleep in a satin bonnet. It cuts down on rubbing and keeps the installation neater for longer.

Try to avoid rough knitwear and hats that catch on the fibres. If a few strands get fuzzy, smooth them carefully with a hair straightener on a low setting, over a damp cloth. This is also a gentle way to tidy the ends.

4. How long can I wear them?

Most people wear synthetic dreadlocks for four to eight weeks, then take them out so their own hair can rest. If the set is still in good shape, take a short break and install it again later.

Once they are out, wash and moisturise your own hair and give your scalp a few easy days.

5. Can I reuse synthetic dreadlocks?

Absolutely. Wash them, dry them fully and smooth them out if needed. With a bit of care, a good set can stay comfortable and beautiful for years.

Quick care recap

  • Wash when needed — about every two weeks works for most people.
  • Always let the locs dry properly.
  • Protect them from friction at night with a loose tie or satin bonnet.
  • After four to eight weeks, take them out and give your own hair a breather.

Look after your synthetic dreadlocks a little, and they will keep looking like you just stepped out of the chair.
